I learned how to surf in Waikiki at Populars. My mom taught me how to surf. The overwhelming stoke from standing up on a surfboard gliding across the wave grabbed my spirit. The rest of my life was going to be all about surfing. I have been blessed with an amazingly long ride through life as a surfer. I was stoked on surfing as a young kid. Still stoked today.
For over 56 years, I have been surfing through the good and the tragic times. I have been involved in almost every aspect of surfing. Surfing has brought me immense joy and taught me to let things go.
I look back and cherish the many fond memories. The friends I have made along the way have made the journey incredible. Now, I want to share experiences I had (and will have) with others.
A cornerstone for my stoke is my family and heritage. My dad taught me about Aloha from his days in Hawaii. My grandfather (Dosan) left a noble legacy imprinted on my life forever. I am proud to be Korean and Irish as well.
I feel lucky to have lived during the era of surfing I grew up in. In many ways it was the wild west, and we were unplugged. Today, surfing capability exceeds what it was in my time. Technology has allowed surfers to meet extreme challenges we only dreamed of. Somehow, the soul of surfing has evolved into another realm with different ethos. Nevertheless, surfing is all about being stoked.
